Construction of state Route 8 through town in the late 1950s uncovered two areas of mineralization preserved in collections, but poorly described. One is the Reynolds Bridge area at the south end of Thomaston near the border with Watertown. Minerals found there are covered by this page: https://www.mindat.org/loc-213284.html

Of particular note here is a calc-silicate assemblage rich in axinite-(Fe), a very rare mineral in Connecticut. Schooner (1961) reports that this was found "in the area around Thomaston Dam" but clearly not at the railroad cut just west of the dam. Yale Peabody Museum has two specimens of it that are cataloged as coming from an unspecified Route 8 road cut. Another specimen (https://www.mindat.org/photo-997893.html) is labeled as coming from a road cut north of Thomaston. I assume it is the large cut where Routes 8 and 222 intersect, which is where one would exit the highway to drive to the dam. There are some other cuts along the highway further north.

Some of the minerals noted in these specimens overlap with those listed in King (1986) as "from a single boulder found near Route 8". These minerals were collected by William Brunet and include diopside, amphibole, fluorapatite, pyrrhotite, quartz, plagioclase and titanite. Also from the area are "excellent examples of both zoisite (XRD) and clinozoisite (XRD) associated with quartz and plagioclase." The XRD was reportedly done by Dr. Richard Mitchell.

Detailed Mineral List:

Actinolite
Formula: ◻Ca2(Mg4.5-2.5Fe0.5-2.5)Si8O22(OH)2
Colour: green
Description: In a calc-silicate lens with intergrown albite, epidote, diopside, axinite-(Fe), clinozoisite, titanite, rutile.
Albite
Formula: Na(AlSi3O8)
Axinite-(Fe)
Formula: Ca2Fe2+Al2BSi4O15OH
Habit: "small plates and confused aggregates" (Schooner, 1961)
Colour: pale lavender-gray
Description: Intergrown with albite, epidote, diopside, actinolite, clinozoisite, and titanite w/accessory rutile, apparently from a calc-silicate lens. Yale Peabody Museum has two similar specimens labeled as coming from a Route 8 road cut. Another specimen has a label saying it is from a roadcut north of Thomaston, perhaps the large cuts at the intersection of Routes 8 and 222. Schooner (1961) says the assemblage was "found in the area around the Thomaston Dam" and that "some excellent specimens" were obtained. Clear microcrystals are present in little voids between the massive axinite plates.
Calcite
Formula: CaCO3
Habit: scalenohedral
Colour: white
Fluorescence: pink
Description: Translucent, doubly-terminated crystals typically <1 cm, with orange-yellow stilbite.
Clinozoisite
Formula: (CaCa)(AlAlAl)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Habit: masses of elongated crystals
Colour: clove brown
Description: In a calc-silicate lens with intergrown albite, actinolite, axinite-(Fe), diopside, epidote, titanite, rutile.
Diopside
Formula: CaMgSi2O6
Description: In a calc-silicate lens in the schist with intergrown albite, actinolite, axinite-(Fe), clinozoisite, epidote, titanite, rutile.
Epidote
Formula: (CaCa)(AlAlFe3+)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Habit: massive
Colour: olive green
Description: In a calc-silicate lens in the schist with intergrown albite, actinolite, axinite-(Fe), clinozoisite, titanite, rutile.
Fluorapatite
Formula: Ca5(PO4)3F
Pyrite
Formula: FeS2
Pyrrhotite
Formula: Fe1-xS
Quartz
Formula: SiO2
Rutile
Formula: TiO2
Description: In a calc-silicate lens in the schist with intergrown albite, actinolite, axinite-(Fe), diopside, epidote, titanite, clinozoisite.
'Stilbite Subgroup'
Formula: M6-7[Al8-9Si27-28O72] · nH2O
Habit: bortyoidal to sheaf-like aggregates
Colour: orange-yellow
Description: Aggregates typically around 1 cm.
Titanite
Formula: CaTi(SiO4)O
Colour: yellow and light brownish
Description: In a calc-silicate lens in the schist with intergrown albite, actinolite, axinite-(Fe), epidote, diopside, clinozoisite, rutile.
Zoisite
Formula: (CaCa)(AlAlAl)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Habit: subhedral elongated prismatic
Colour: light gray
Description: Mass of elongated crystals with quartz labeled as "diopside" from this location, but looks more like zoisite. Some edges of the specimen show rounding and weathering suggesting the original find was a glacial cobble rather than rock taken from the road cut. This could be from the find by William Brunet described in King (1986).
