This mine worked a stretch of land between the County Crosscourse in the west and the Great Western Railway in the east, straddling the boundaries of Chacewater, Redruth and St Agnes parishes. The Wheal Hawke and Wheal Rose sections are immediately west and east, respectively, of the small stream that flows north-westwards through the property, near the road leading to Mawla. Wheal Rose section is now completely built over, as is the westernmost part of the sett, which has disappeared under a golf course.
In the western (Great North Downs) section, the sett contains seven lodes. These are, from north to south, Main lode, Vivian's lode, Tenpenny lode, Pendarves North lode, Spelter lode, Pendarves South lode, and Peevor lode. The latter is an eastern extension of one of the lodes worked at Wheal Peevor, which borders the Great North Downs sett to the west. Only the Main lode extends for the full distance through the sett, from County Crosscourse in the west to Wheal Rose section in the east. The lodes were worked by a number of shafts arranged in a line that runs roughly parallel to the present A30 road.
Between 1862 and 1897, the mine produced 9,110 tons of 7% copper ore, 14 tons of black tin and 373 tons of arsenopyrite. From Wheal Rose section, another 12,820 tons of 6.5% copper ore and 18 tons of black tin were raised from 1826 to 1872. Small amounts of tin and tungsten were produced from 1912 to 1918, when the mine was worked in conjunction with Wheal Peevor.
