The What Cheer Mining Company was organized in 1854 to work land explored in 1853 after favorable exploration results were obtained. The mine began operations in 1855 by trenching three separate veins that crossed the property. The veins were later discovered to be the Douglass Houghton Vein, the same vein the Douglass Houghton Mine was working. Four shafts were sunk on two of the veins which produced good amounts of barrel and stamp copper as they were driven. The mine continued operations until 1860 when all work was ceased. It is unknown why the mine closed.
