Meteorite di Alfianello, Alfianello, provincia di Brescia, Lombardia, Italia
Ordinary chondrite, veined (L6, S5, W0)
Fell, 16 February 1883; 228 kg
Italy's most massive meteorite fall
After detonations were heard a single large stone fell to the earth penetrating the soil to a depth of ~ 1m. The stone, which fell entire, was broken into pieces by the farmer who owned the land. Silicates, mostly equilibrated olivine (Fa24) and orthopyroxene (Fs22), occupy nearly 90% of the meteorite. Chondrules are very poorly defined. Fe-Ni metal (mostly kamacite) and troilite are the most important accessory phases. The Fe-Ni metal is disseminated in very small grains. Chromite and other minor opaques are also present. Planar deformation of olivine and conversion of plagioclase into maskelynite are two of several indicators of strong preterrestrial shock (stage S5). A cosmic ray exposure age of ~28.0 MA is reported.
Alfianello is one of 269 meteorite falls classified exactly as an L6 chondrite at The Meteoritical Bulletin Database (January 2016). After recovery, the main mass was sliced and distributed widely. Masses in the 4-10 kg range are still held by several museums.
