Hosted at the top of a silicified black shale lens in mafic to ultramafic schists, 3498 Ma old, in the Double Bar Formation of the Warrawoona Group. The source states it is the oldest mineral occurrence in the Pilbara (other sources name Big Stubby, and a couple of other deposits as oldest in the Pilbara, and oldest in the world).
At the surface is a limonitic bed a few metres thick, with minor malachite and azurite. At depth the deposit is 30% pyrite, with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, and arsenopyrite.
