Sparone, a municipality located in the middle Orco Valley, is reported as the type locality for ardennite-(V).
The study of the new mineral species ardennite-(V) was carried out on the unique specimen known at that moment, consisting of ardennite-(V), piemontite and quartz, collected by the geologist Augusto Stella in 1893, during the geological survey of Orco and Soana valleys, and preserved in the collection of the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali (MRSN) of Turin (Barresi et al., 2007). The recorded locality for the specimen was Sparone. For a certain time, the place where the new phase was found remained unknown. In fact, in the zone investigated by Minnigh (1978a,b) [described as «impervious and wild rocks near the hamlet of Apparè»] "ardennite" is not present (only spessartine, piemontite, hematite, magnesioriebeckite, quartz, "chlorite", "mica" and Mn-oxides) and in the zone investigated by Pognante et al. (1988) any Mn-deposit (or boudin) was found (M.E. Ciriotti pers. comm., 2008).
Later, a very limited quantity of "ardennite" (yellow fibers) was found in one of the two erratic blocks with piemontite, braunite, quartz and micas that occurred in the bed of Rio dei Piani, near Feilongo hamlet, SW of Sparone (M.E. Ciriotti, 05/04/2008). The study of this "ardennite" showed that it is ardennite-(V). Consequently, Rio dei Piani , Feilongo, Sparone, in whose bed the erratic blocks have been found, is most probably the same place where A. Stella collected in 1893 the type specimen of ardennite-(V) (Ciriotti et al., 2009).
Note: The valley is also known as Locana Valley.
