Vulcano is the southernmost of the seven islands of the Aeolian island arc and, with an area of 22 km², it is the third-largest island, following Lipari and Salina.
The subaerial volcanism (ca. 127 ka to present) built up a NW-SE elongated composite structure. The exposed volcanism started at ca. 127 ka and spread through eight Eruptive Epochs separated by volcano-tectonic events and major quiescent stages. Various eruptive centres and two intersecting multi-stage calderas (Il Piano and La Fossa calderas) resulted from such evolution. Volcanics older than 20 ka consist mostly of high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic mafic rocks. High-K calc-alkaline, shoshonitic, and potassic rocks formed from 20 to 8 ka, display a much larger range of SiO2 (from shoshonites to rhyolites) and higher concentrations of incompatible elements with respect to the previous stage. Volcanics younger than 8 ka consist of shoshonitic and leucite-bearing potassic mafic rocks, with abundant intermediate and silicic products.
Some individual mineral localities on the island with the following phases:
- basalt lava outcrop between Monte Cardo and Monte Molineddo: allophane (white to blue-green mammillary coatings in small lava cavities - Panichi, 1914);
- Monte Molineddo: gearksutite (white rounded masses up to 2 cm embedded in pyroclatics - Sabor & Sabor, 1997); a different occurrence (white impregnations, veins, irregular nests and nodules in pyroclastics) was previously reported by Bernauer (1941); another occurrence with plagioclase and Mn oxides (ranciéite) has been reported by S. Möckel inside an ejectum from La Fossa crater (personal communication in Campostrini et al., 2011). Furthermore, euhedral clinopyroxene (augite) crystals are abundant in pyroclastics;
- unspecified locality: bararite (no description, dubious occurrence - Montrasio et al., 1996);
- unspecified fumaroles: magnesioferrite (dubious occurrence - Palache et al., 1944).
