Blue Rock Mine


A former Pb-Ag-Zn-Cu-Au mine located in sec. 24, T10S, R3W, SLM, 1.2 km (0.75 mi) N of Eureka and 1,700 feet (ca. 518 m) N45W of Eureka Peak, on private land. Discovered in 1870. Operated during the period 1875 to 1955. Owned by the Sharon Steel Corp., Miami, Florida. Operated by the U.S. Smelting, Refining and Mining Co. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.

Mineralization is a polymetallic deposit hosted in dolomite. The orebodies are lenticular/pipe-shaped structures with a depth-to-bottom of 548.64 meters and a maximum width of 30.48 meters (ca. 100 ft).

The California pipe was the best in the mine. It has a strike of N5W, dip of 75 and a depth-to-bottom of 457.2 meters and a width of 38.1 meters.

Controls for ore emplacement included 5 fracture zones.

Local alteration resulted in calcite, sericite, pyrite, and metals in rhyolite.

An associated rock is Oligocene-Late Cambrian quartz monzonite.

Local rocks include Middle Cambrian shale and carbonate rocks in central Utah.

Bedding rolls toward flat here and in mines to the S at and below the 16–18 levels. Beds strike N5-10W and dip 70-80E.

Faults: the Centennial Fault (N45E, 67SE); California Fault (Left-Lateral, NW, 60-75SW, with 200 to 500 feet (ca. 152 m) of horizontal displacement); E-W fractures dipping 68S.

Structure description: easterly cross breaks.

Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 695.25 meters and an overall length of 32,186 meters. The development consists of drifts, raise, and shafts covering a surface area of 400 to 800 feet (ca. 244 m) wide and 2,800 feet (ca. 853 m) long. The deepest shaft is 2,281 feet (ca. 695 m) with 20 levels. A 2,207-foot adit connects with this shaft on the 525 level. The mine is connected with the Opex and Grand Central on the S and the Eureka Hill to the N.

Production information: An average of 100,000 tons of ore per year. $50,000,000 total value of production (period values).
