About MonzoniteHide

Name:
Monzonite was originally named after the Monzoni mountain range in Val di Fassa (Trento Province, Italy).
A coarse-grained igneous rock containing almost equal amounts of alkali feldspar and plagioclase, and thus intermediate between syenite and diorite. Quartz is minor or absent. Either hornblende or diopside, or both, are present and biotite is a common constituent. Accessories are apatite, zircon, sphene, and opaque oxides.
The intrusive equivalent of latite.

Synonym of: syenodiorite.

Mineralogy of MonzoniteHide

Essential minerals - these are minerals that are required within the classification of this rock:
Feldspar > Alkali FeldsparA subgroup of the Feldspar Group, poor in calcium, and mostly rich in potassium.
Feldspar > Plagioclase(Na,Ca)[(Si,Al)AlSi2]O8
Non-essential minerals - these minerals are common, sometimes major components, but are not always present:
Amphibole(Na, K, ◻)(Ca,Na)2(Mg,Fe,Al)5((Si,Al)8O22)(OH,F,Cl,O)2
PyroxeneA petrological term for Pyroxene Group.

Age distributionHide

Recorded ages:
Phanerozoic : 300 ± 6 Ma to 84 Ma - based on 6 recorded ages.
