A calc-silicate unit of the Cambrian Stockbridge Marble dominated by grossular variety hessonite. The grossular makes up the bulk of the rock matrix and good but typically small crystals line voids or are in contact with calcite. Murphy (1966) reports that it was allegedly mined from pits further back from the road by Tiffany's for use as an abrasive.
It was first described by Shepard (1837):
A second locality of massive garnet is in Reading, on the crosscut turnpike, four miles south of Danbury. It occurs directly by the road-side, and is extremely abundant: the only associated mineral is a granular pyroxene, nor is this generally present. Masses of the pure garnet many feet in diameter were common in loose blocks....It undoubtedly here exists in place, and in the greatest abundance.

ⓘ Albite Formula: Na(AlSi3O8) Habit: equant Colour: white References: |
ⓘ Calcite Formula: CaCO3 Habit: massive Colour: white Description: Massive material fills some voids, it can be dissolved away with acid to reveal nice grossular crystals. |
ⓘ Clinozoisite Formula: (CaCa)(AlAlAl)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH) Habit: acicular Colour: green-gray Description: An apple green to grey mineral found in terminated crystals up to two inches long. Occasionally a piece will be found with a radiating fan of crystals similar to stilbite. |
ⓘ Diopside Formula: CaMgSi2O6 Habit: short prisms Colour: green Description: Occasionally well formed. |
✪ Grossular Formula: Ca3Al2(SiO4)3 Habit: dodecahedral Colour: orange to cinnamon Description: Massive matrix material and lustrous crystals to 1.5 inches lining voids or hiding under calcite. |
✪ Grossular var. Hessonite Formula: Ca3Al2(SiO4)3 Habit: dodecahedral Colour: orange to cinnamon Description: Massive matrix material and lustrous crystals to 1.5 inches lining voids or hiding under calcite. |
ⓘ Quartz Formula: SiO2 Habit: mostly massive, prismatic micros Colour: pale gray, white, colorless Description: Massive, though Murphy (1966) says it sometimes occurs as crude crystals. Micro crystals associated with clinozoisite. |
ⓘ Titanite Formula: CaTi(SiO4)O Habit: tabular disk Colour: colorless to pale orange-brown Description: Micro-crystals in voids with similar color and luster to the garnet, so quite possibly common but overlooked. References: |
