The Union Mine at Mica has produced quartz, feldspar and muscovite and is situated 40 kilometres southwest of Phalaborwa. This is an opencast operation, and, historically in 1986 was producing 20 000 metric tonnes a year. Quartz is relatively pure, while microcline (potassium feldspar) is extracted for the ceramics industry. Muscovite is present as large book-like crystals. From a collectors standpoint, blue-green apatite is present in relatively small amount but can form attractive, small well-formed crystals. (Extract from Cairncross and Dixon, 1995).
