The Pennington Mine (Sec 10 T46N R29W) was an strip mine was opened in 1913 by the Pennington Mining Company, with ore shipped by the Tod-Stambaugh Company. The initial pit was over 1000 feet long and excavated to a depth of over 100 feet. An underground mine was begun in 1955. The ore was primarily hematite and goethite in Proterozoic banded iron formation of the Trommald Formation. The bedrock is complexly folded and fractured. The operation exposed large masses of a probably meta-igneous intrusive rock, now partly altered to schist and slate. The slate is rich in alunite and is also pyritic, with the pyrite rapidly breaking down upon exposure to the air. Also exposed were masses of probable Rabbit Lake Formation also metamorphosed to schist. Minerals in the schist include chlorite, muscovite, apatite and, locally, pyrite cubes up to 1 inch across. The flooded pit and overgrown dumps of the mine site are now a major part of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation area. It is administered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and no collecting is permited.
