This is one of several sites reserved by the Department of Conservation for gold fossicking. No permit is required for any of the sites, and only hand tools are allowed. Several people have been charged in this area for using mechanised equipment, and fossicking outside of designated areas. See Department of Conservation website for the most up to date details.
New Creek is 16 kilometres west of St. Arnaud. Turn off State Highway 65, south into the Howard Valley Road. This is 2wd with care (gravel, narrow, blind bends), and after about 20 minutes, the signposted turn-off to New Creek is reached. The track into New Creek is 4wd only. Access to the creek requires clambering down steep slopes.
Continuing along the Howard Valley Road is still 2wd, a short distance to a basic campground, creek ford, and track to the Louis Creek public gold fossicking area. The Louis Creek track is 4wd recommended, and the stream depth is highly variable depending on the weather. Do not cross if flooded.
