Locality type:
Köppen climate type:
Oldest known kimberlite at the time of writing.
Discovered by Stockdale Prospecting Limited in 1991 as a small weathered silicified macrocrystic kimberlite.
It shows relict olivine and phlogopite macrocrysts, and an altered groundmass of phlogopite and pseudomorphs after monticellite.
It is the third occurrence discovered for yimengite, a rare lithiophile element oxide, occurring at the site as a metosomatic alteration product of chromium spinel macrocrysts. It is rare at the deposit, associated with phlogopite, K-richterite, secondary diopside, Mg chromite, lindsleyite, Mg-Cr ilmenite, and Nb-Cr rutile.
Chomium rich spinel appears common, very rare pyrope-garnet and picro-ilmenite, with only two tiny diamond fragments found during drilling.
The site is just within the Menzies Shire, however access via the faint track to the remote location comes in from the east and the Leonora Shire, and it made sense to retain it under the latter shire to prevent confusion. It is not part of a goldfield or near a station homestead.
