At about the same time as Edward McCahon discovered his Great Hope lease, William McLellan, Campbell and Dennis discovered a parallel lode one mile further south-east. It contained dark green chloritic schist and talc, showing gold freely in cleavages.
Leases were soon pegged in all directions, with 120 new syndicates and companies listed on the Adelaide stock exchange. Most did not get off the ground, the few that did were mismanaged, on low grade deposits, which were never going to repay the huge prices the prospectors were demanding. Having now seen twenty fives years of this type of activity, the media warned investors away, and the goldfield never recovered until leases were combined and modern companies entered the scene in the 1990's.
McLellan claimed he turned down a 20 000 pound offer for the lease, which at that stage amounted to a costean and a few pot holes. About 3000 pounds was a normal price.
They also briefly took over the Lass O'Gowrie mine just to the south, and employed John Stevenson, Randolph Bedford and W.H. Melvin as promoters to float a company in Adelaide. The vendors were to get 40 000 shares, the promoters 50 000 shares, leaving only 45 000 independent shares for the public to pay the balance owing, with no control over the company. The script was black listed by the Adelaide stock exchange.
They also tried to float in 1920 a lease called The Scotia they owned on the field, as a 30 000 pound option. When it comes to gold, greed knows no bounds. The boom quickly went bust, as investors fled the scene, and the few companies that got off the ground only succeeded in bankrupting investors within a year or two.
