The Great Winara was active briefly just after the turn of the Twentieth Century, then forgotten about. Today it is a 200 metre north-west to south-east line of shafts and minor mullock. There are no access tracks, and has been little visited in over one hundred years. It is not near a public road.
Minor crushings were found between 1904 to 1906. Mining was spasmodic even during this short period. The reef was low grade, 3 to 10 feet wide, with some costeans and a couple of shafts down to 70 feet deep. The ore was laminated containing antimony and bismuth. One prospector claimed to have found telluride at the location, and stated he had tested the material to confirm this. It is impossible to confirm, and some doubt needs to be attached to the claims considering the low grade nature of the deposit.
E. Church is part of one syndicate, with E. and V. Kearns at the south end of the ridge; Fry and White are mentioned at the north end near a large quartz blow. James Williamson of the Moonstone mine at Mulwarrie, is also noted as putting through a couple of small crushings.
