The Homeward Bound Gold Mine is a historic lease, one of several which is now occupied by the modern and abandoned Waihi open pits, just north-west of the former town site of Davyhurst. It adjoined to the east of the Golden Pole lease, and north of the Waihi. 12 acres. It was developed by Kearns and party. The lease contained four shafts, that by 1900 were down to a maximum of 40 feet in hard ground.

The lease contained two well defined reefs, and they were trial crushing in 1900, so was pegged just after the Waihi was discovered. Immediately after this, leases were pegged in all directions. It is common for these type of fields to have many minor leases initially, where some shallow shafts were sunk, some gold found, or maybe none at all, before they get abandoned. These have generally not been listed on Mindat, as little information exists for this type of lease. Just in this small area, leases included the Waihi, Golden Pole, Homeward, Waihi Consols, Waihi North, Waihi North Extended, Two Jacks, Champion,Melrose, Melrose South, Warner's United, South Pole amongst others.

Little gold was found in the Homeward Bound, at least not enough to pay costs. Like all the mines in this area it was a large low grade affair, more suited in time to large scale mechanised ore extraction, where tiny amounts of gold is obtained from processing huge tonnages of ore. Little happened after 1905.

In the early 1930's, a private battery existed on the old Homeward Bound lease. The Australian Development NL abandoned boring in 1936, when it proved gold values were too low.

The lease contained several lines of reef striking north north-west to south south-east, with bunchy quartz up to 6 feet wide, dipping vertically. The lodes were almost entirely quartz, with a few inches of hornblende schist next to the walls. The schist carried high grade gold it was claimed. Weathering had only reached a depth of 30 feet, in hard greenstone country.
