Lefroy Imperial

3 kilometres south of Widgiemooltha. Marked now by a small abandoned open pit. Several of these are in the area including Cardiff Castle just east, Mount, Central, Munda etc in an area south of Widgiemooltha called Mount Morgan.

Limited information found. An Adelaide syndicate was operating the mine but abandoned it in 1897 after water flooded the workings. At this stage it was called the Lefroy Imperial Mine, but subsequently the Lefroy was dropped. 1899 the mine was owned by the Highgate Hill Syndicate who erected a 3 head battery, they intended to make available for public crushing.

Humphreys (or Humphries) and O'Donoghue are crushing stone in 1908 from an open cut. The source states before this Kingswood and party owned the mine. A strong syndicate is reported to have taken over the mine in 1920, but no more is said.

The early 1930's the property is owned again by Kingswood, along with Hack and Towie (surnames). Western Mining Corporation is sampling the property early 1934. Later in 1934, the Adelaide based Bega Company takes out an option, but soon abandons it.

In 1947 the Imperial Gold Mines Ltd takes an option over the mine. At the time the mine was owned by S. Green , former Widgiemooltha Hotel publican. The sources states the name is co-incidental, although the writer suggests the company was formed with the intention to operate the Imperial lease. Subsequent drilling failed to find ore that was payable and the lease was abandoned.

The Imperial gold mine was described as a very large but low grade affair. Its size attracted interest, and it low gold grades caused dis-appointment.
