The location is in a break in a low ridge some 500 metres west of the Gibraltar open pit. GML 834N.
The lease was pegged after F. Cooke, McMahon and Richards found an alluvial patch in October 1908. Each of the party made 1500 pounds in money in a short time. They were obtaining 4 to 5 ounces of alluvial gold per week from the area, when they dug down and found a rich leader at a depth of 10 feet. They applied for four leases, named by them as Blackjack in 1908. In January 1909, they crushed 9 tonnes from the leader, for the impressive 580 ounces of gold.
The gold mine was probably taken over by a succession of prospectors, but little information was found of further gold discoveries. The exception was a party of miners in 1918 who obtained 435 ounces from the lease of dollied gold and specimen stone. The report states most of the money was spent at the local hotel.
