Historic gold mine, now a tourist mine.
Located 4 kms north of Charleston and 26 kms south of Westport on State Highway 6.
Owned by descendants of the original miners, who give a talk on the history of the mine, then its a self guided walk through the workings. Tunnels, battery, waterwheel, miner's hut, old ore cart tracks, sluice boxes, various mining relics, glow worms, and fluffy footed chickens, are some of the things mentioned by visitors.
The gold here was very fine, found in iron hardened sandstone, and crushed much the same way as gold in quartz.
Gets rave reviews online.
