The Shire of Waroona is 110 kilometres south of Perth, covers 835 square kilometres and contains 3 582 people.
The shire forms a relatively thin west-east slice, starting at the ocean around Preston Beach. Immediately behind the beach is the Yalgorup National Park, containing tuart forest, lakes, thrombolites (which are cousins to stromatolites). The shire then stretches over flat farmland of the Perth Coastal Plain to the town of Waroona at the base of the Darling Scarp (Darling Range). The eastern portion of the shire is on the scarp and plateau beyond and is mainly forested.
The major mine in the shire is the Willowdale bauxite mine, and its associated Wagerup processing plant. The mine is near the eastern boundary of the shire, deep in the forest. No specimens are seen from the shire.
