Yelavich's Quarry


A now closed (2016) road metal quarry in basaltic andesite. This is the last of a number of quarries that operated in the Waitakere ranges. Some loose material is still scattered around as remediation of the area is not complete (2018). Remediation is under way with dumping of clean fill to aid landscaping and lowest level has now filled with water (2021).

The petrography of Waitakere Group is typically calcalkaline. With the exception of the hornblende bearing rocks from the Tokatoka suite, petrographic similarity is a feature of the group. The most abundant rock type is basalt to basaltic andesite, and to a lesser extent, andesite; all are porphyritic (Wright and Black, 1981).
Black & Sameshima (undated) analysed the green clay coating of the vesicles in the Waitakere Ranges and found it was consistent with the iron-saponite described by Kohyama, N., Shimoda, S. & Sudo, T. Iron-Rich Saponite (Ferrous and Ferric Forms). Clays Clay Miner. 21, 229–237 (1973).

Balls of "thomsonite" that were found in a small section of the quarry are now believed to be the "puflerite" variety of stilbite-Ca. Stilbite has not previously been reported from Te Henga Quarry, but does occur regularly within the Waitakere Group.
