Limestone quarry, presently reclaimed, located along the left bank of River Pakhra upstream of the Moscow-Kursk railroad bridge.
The quarry is famous for the presence of Ni-bearing minerals and particularly for nickeloan calcite from karst in dolomitized limestones of Carboniferous age. According to Lebedev & Stepanov (1955) mixtures of bravoite, sphalerite, and galena occurring in the overlying Oxfordian clay formation are the source of Ni in the epigenetic minerals deposited by hydrothermal fluids within the underlying karst. The earthy "pyrolusite" associated with nickeloan calcite mentioned by Lebedev & Stepanov (1955) is ascribable to cryptomelane (Pavel M. Kartashov analytical data).
