The Mars open pit is at the northern end of Delta Island, half-way between Kambalda and the Lefroy Mill. The pit has been used as access to the nearby Belleisle underground mine. Minotaur, Agamenon, Delta, Revenge and several other mines are found on this small island, virtually neighbouring each other.
Gold at Mars is associated with two main shear systems. The first is called the HG System, which is a moderately to shallowly dipping series of stacked shears within a complex quartz vein and alteration array plunging south-east.
The second is the MG System, which is shallowly east dipping, north north-west striking, series of stacked quartz veins and shears of a short dip extent. HG contains most of the gold, and forms the deeper parts of the system.
Gold is controlled by a combination of a jog in the north north-west striking, moderately west dipping Mars Shear Zone, by the crest of the Delta Island Anticline, and further by a series of intermediate sills that intrude sub-parallel to the stratigraphy.
All this is overlain by 15 to 40 metres of Tertiary sediments that deepens to the north-west. The supergene zone is a thin continuous sub-horizontal layer at the top of the regolith, extending upwards into the Tertiary sediments.
