Not to be confused with Orchin deposit, which is immediately south of the North Orchin open pit. Both are found near the southern shoreline of Lake Lefroy and next to the Lefroy Mill and administration offices.
Mining began at the North Orchin open cut in March 2002, and produced 252 000 ounces of gold.
Gold mineralisation is hosted by north trending shear zones (A2 Shear) within Defiance Dolerite. The A2 is a pinch and swell structure, striking north to north-east, and dipping 55 degrees east. The reverse slip shear has vertically displaced the stratigraphy by 40 metres. The shear also has a sinistral slip. South plunging dilational jogs in the North Orchin Shear form sites for high grade gold values within the flatter portions of the shear. Other portions show low to marginal gold values.
