Horseshoe Harbor is located on the south shore of Lake Superior in a 1,053 acre Nature Conservancy and collecting is not allowed. Prior to the establishment of the conservancy there were many agates collected in the Lake Shore Traps inland from the shore. Some still turn up in old collections.
If you drive east of Copper Harbor to the end of the pavement, the gravel road continues up hill. At one mile past the pavement there is a two-track, turn left on the two-track heading north. You will eventually come to a DNR sign at the trail head. Follow the trail north to the beach and you will be at Horseshoe Harbor where the photos were taken. The stromatolites are in the Copper Harbor Conglomerate as described in the descriptions on the photos. The brownish red pebbles on the beach are rhyolite. The rock outcrops are Copper Harbor Conglomerate interfingered with sandstone and mudstone.
