A graphitic slate quarry operated by the Detroit Graphite Company during 1912 and prior years. Graphite was extracted from the quarried slate at a facility in L'Anse and used as paint pigment.
The quarry consists of a shallow open pit accessed through a narrow cut through a hillside. It lies in the Michigamme Lower Slate formation near the contact with a gneiss complex to the south. The slates near this contact have been reported to contain between 17% and 30% graphite, and samples from the Detroit Graphite Quarry have been found to contain 35% graphite.
