The oldest mine in the Illinois - Kentucky fluorspar district, it was opened in 1835 by a consortium of men including President Andrew Jackson. They sought silver from the galena. In the 1940's the mine was briefly reopened as a source of zinc in the form of sphalerite. The mine is privately owned, and it is possible to get permission to collect from the dumps. In 2005 & 2006, trenches were dug on the vein and through old mine workings. Massive fluorite, galena crystals, smoky quartz, and vugs of smithsonite (several colors) have been found.
