Old lead-zinc mining area, part of the Leadhills-Wanlockhead Mining District (see Leadhills, http://www.mindat.org/loc-3032.html).
Mining activities stopped in the 1930, a short period of revival in the 1950s and some dump treat continued up to the 1960s, with dumps used for road fill to around the 1980s-'90s.
