About Anthophyllite Root Name Group
Formula:
◻{X2}{Z5}(Si8O22)(OH)2
The Anthophyllite root name minerals is defined as orthorhombic magnesium-iron-manganese amphiboles with Pnma or Pnmn space group symmetry. The space group Pnma is assumed, and the space group Pnmn (where determined) is indicated by the prefix proto.
The individual minerals are defined based on their dominant elements in the X (= IMA B) and Z (= IMA C) positions.
The root-name mineral, anthophyllite are defined with Mg as the dominant element in both the X (= IMA B) and Z (= IMA C) positions. Minerals in this group with other dominant elements are named with pre-fixes in accordance with the guidelines establised in the 2012 amphibole nomenclature.
In mindat.org we avoid using variables with the same symbol as elements and deviate from the IMA nomenclaure in that we use X rather than B, Z rather than C and (OH,F,Cl,O) rather than W.

Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Name:
From the Latin "anthophyllum," meaning "clove" (itself derived from the Greek άνθος for "flower" and φύλλον for "leaf" ), in allusion to its common clove-brown colour.
