A Mn occurrence located in sec. 26, T6S, R10E, SBM, 0.9 km (0.5 mile) E of Blake Hill (coordinates of record), 10 miles ENE of Mecca and 0.15 miles W of Shaver’s Well at N33.62028 W115.91863, along the E slope of the Mecca Hills. Discovered in 1942. In 1945 the claim was owned by Lelon Noblitt. It was still owned by him in (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in schist. The ore body is nodules with a strike of N60W, a dip of 47NE and a width of 0.61 meter. The Mn nodules occur along the strike of the schist. 10 to 30% Mn. Local rocks include Plio-Pleistocene and Pliocene loosely consolidated deposits and/or Quaternary alluvium and marine deposits.
Workings include surface openings comprised of a shallow cut 20 feet long and remained visible in 2005.
The Mn occurrences in this area (Noblitt, Box Canyon, Big Bullet, Pinkham and unnamed prospects) were worked only during WW I and WW II when the Mn-demand was high and the import difficult.
Shaver’s Well (N33.61969 W115.91611) dug in 1857 by prospector Henry Hartman, hired by John Shaver (Riverside County Board), to provide water for travelers. It is now hidden by some tamarisk trees.
