A former lode Au mine located in the SE¼ sec. 26, NE corner sec. 35 & in the NW¼ sec. 36 (details estimated for each sec.), about 3 miles SW of Buckhorn Peak and about 5 miles S of Coulterville, along Scotch Gulch, near its confluence with the Merced River, on private (patented) land. Operated by Joseph and Emilie Kopf. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. This locality is apparently inundated beneath the Scotch Gulch arm of Lake McClure (Exchequer Reservoir). Claim extends for more than 5,500 feet along a branch of the Mother Lode.
Mineralization is a quartz vein deposit hosted in serpentinite and slate. The ore body is a pinch and swell type body that strikes N45W and dips steeply NE at a thickness of 3.05 meters. The quartz vein is 3 to 10 feet thick on contact between a serpentine intrusion and slate of the Upper Jurassic Mariposa Formation.
Workings include underground openings with an overall length of 1,676.4 meters and comprised of a 50 foot inclined shaft and a tunnel of unknown length, now caved.
Operated at various times in conjunction with the Crown Peak and Red Bank or Stevenson group of claims. It had a long record of intermittent activity but only a small record of production. Idle.
