A former Au mine located in secs. 9 & 16, T4S, R17E, MDM, 3.7 km (2.3 miles) ESE of Bagby and 3.3 km (2.0 miles) NNE of Bear Valley, E of Rocky Gulch and ½ mile S of the Merced River (1 mile E of the Pine Tree Mine). The old property was active in the earliest days of mining in the county. It was worked intermittently by various lessees up to 1948. Operated <1903 to 1948. Operated by the Pacific Mining Co. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. A holding company owns the French, French Pocket and Evans Mines. Recent Au gravels on the S side of the Merced River (Bulletin 108).
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in Late Permian slate and greenstone. The ore body strikes N70E and dips 30S. The wall rocks of 2 parallel veins are metapyroxene andesite greenstone of unknown age and slaty metasediments of Paleozoic age. Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of a crosscut adit 155 feet long with drifts totaling 660 feet, 2 inclined shafts, drifts and levels. The total footage of workings is 1,048.
Production data are found in: Bowen and Gray (1957).
Total recorded production since 1903 is about $116,750.00 (period values), and production prior to that time may have been several times that amount. Ore removed in 1903 averaged $44.16 (period values) per ton. In 1924 the average was $16.53; and in 1935-1948, the yield was $13.99 (period values) per ton.
