A former borate mine located in the NW¼ sec. 17, T25N, R3E, SBM, 2.2 km (1.3 miles) SSW of Ryan, along Furnace Creek Wash, probably on National Park Service land (Death Valley National Park). Owned by the U.S. Borax and Chemical Co. (1976). First operated in 1915. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
The Grand View Mine and the Lizzy V. Oakley are located on the connecting rail line between the Ryan camp and the Widow. Both these mines are readily viewed from the Dantes View road. A tunnel was driven from the Widow to the Oakley just before Ryan was closed in 1927. (As per Joseph Siefke, former US Borax geologist at Boron, California.
Mineralization is a Miocene borate deposit (Deposit Model: 260; USGS model code: 35b.3; Deposit model name: Lacustrine borates), hosted in rocks of the Furnace Creek Formation (limestone & Miocene shale). The ore body is 50 meters thick. The deposit extends from the surface to a flat fault 300 feet down dip. Local rocks include Tertiary nonmarine rocks, undivided
and/or Quaternary alluvium and marine deposits.
Workings include unspecified underground openings.
Reserve-Resource data are found in: Evans and others (1976).
Analytical data: Borates (B2O3): 14 weight per cent (1976).
