Several small and generally low-grade uranium-vanadium deposits in Permian-Pennsylvanian sediments occur in a belt from west of Westcliffe in the Malachite and Gardner areas, through the La Veta Pass region to south of Cucharas. The northern part of the area has been referred to as the Huerfano district or the Malachite district. The southern area, toward Spanish Peaks, has been called the La Veta district or the Cuchara district. Old mine claims and diggings south of U.S. Highway 160 approaching the summit of La Veta Pass from Walsenberg include the City Slicker claims (sec. 6, T. 29 S., R. 69 W.). Uranium-bearing deposits also occur in Tertiary sediments, such as in the Florisita Conglomerate 6 mi southeast of Gardner, and in the Huerfano Formation in T. 25-26 S., R. 70 W. Several occurrences in this region are listed by Nelson-Moore and others (1978).
