A former surface and underground Hg mine on a group of 14 mercury claims located in sec. 3, T7N, R9E, ½ mile S of Pine Butte on Gold Creek, on National Forest land. The Northern Light group consists of 10 claims. Discovered and owned by E.H. Bowman and Reynolds. The patented claims extend into secs. 27, 26, 33, T8N, R9E and into sec. 4, T7N, R9E. Operated by Mr. Robert Mcghee. Additional names which apply to this property: Claims MS 4075.
Mineralization is of Hg ore in quartz stringers hosted in schist and sandstone. The ore zone is 4572 meters long and dips 70E. The schist averages about 60 feet wide and contains cinnabar stringers. The cinnabar occurrence is spotty. stringers are up to 6 inches wide. Associated rock unit is the Red Rock Porphyry and rhyolite.
Assay data: 1.4% Hg on the Bernice No. 1 claim; on the Mercury Sulfide No. 5 shows 3.3% Hg.
Workings include a 10 foot deep shaft, tunnels, a 60 foot crosscut drift, 20 foot long drift; and open cuts. The mine was active in 1960.
