World famous locality for exceptional goethite pseudomorphs of goethite after pyrite.
A marble & calcite (onyx) quarry in blue limestone. Owned by Mr. Cedarstrom. Located on the NW shore of Utah Lake about 35 miles South of Salt Lake City and 7 miles West of Lehi.
Geology: A sequence of limestones, dolomites, and calcareous mudstones of the Deseret formation that originated in a Mississippian shallow, lagoon environment. The goethite specimens are found in the calcareous mudstone along with a number of marine fossils, and have been collected at this site since the 1930s. Where not exposed and altered at the surface, oxidation is by exposure to groundwater.
