There was/is a small prospect called "the Goldmine" or "Christian IV's mine". The occurrence of gold has been questioned by Hans Reusch (Teknisk Ukeblad 1916, p. 231) - he thinks the king was fooled! However, gold was described from "Hisøy" and "Arendal harbour" by several authors; Pontoppidan (1752) described gold found in 1644/1645 (Christian IV's time) at Nedenes - Arendal harbour ("in curiam Barlo"), Scheerer (1845b, p. 140) described gold from Langsev and Barbu mines, commenting that "Barlo" most likely is the same as Barbu. Helland (1904, p. 349) supposes the 1644/1645 gold finds came from one of the prospects in Stølsvigen or Vrageviken - one of the prospects still (1904!) is called "the Goldmine"/"Christian IV's mine".
