This is a manganese mining area in T.14 N., R.10 E., about Clintswell.
The manganese deposits occur in an area of approximately 1¼ square miles on the Mogollon plateau at about 7,200 feet of altitude. In this region the plateau is floored by the Permian Kaibab Limestone, which, in places is covered by irregular remnants of Tertiary lavas or mantled by thin soil. Total thickness of this formation locally is approximately 250 feet. Exposed beneath the Kaibab in most of the canyons is the cross-bedded Coconino Sandstone, which overlies the Permian Supai red beds and in this vicinity is approximately 1,000 feet thick. These strata dip gently northeastward.
