Miocene blue marl containing gypsum layers in the Casuni hill, near River Vomano (Amary, 1854; Jervis, 1874).
The usual indication of Montorio al Vomano as the type locality for refikite is not correct (Ciriotti et al., 2009). This indication originated from Des Cloizeaux (1874), who about refikite wrote: «Elle a été nommée en l'honneur de Réfik-Bey par Dr La Cava, professeur à Constantinople, qui l'a découverte vers la fin de 1847, en tubercules de 4 à 10 millimètres d'épaisseur ou en petites veines dans le lignite des environs de Montorio près Feramo [a typo], Abruzzes (Journal des conaissances médicales; Paris 1852)». The lignite deposit, in which refikite was discovered, is located about 600 m from the village of Valle San Giovanni, just above the Trontino river bed, approximately 5 km to the north of Montorio al Vomano. In the period 1816-1868 Valle San Giovanni was an individual municipality. In 1868 this municipality was disbanded: Valle San Giovanni and the surrounding territory joined the municipality of Montorio al Vomano, while the villages of Casanova, Collegilesco, and Faieto joined the Cortino municipality. In 1929, Valle San Giovani was detached from the municipal territory of Montorio al Vomano and merged with Teramo.
