Abandoned gold mine.

Around 1875 McWhirter and party sank a shaft on an auriferous quartz vein, 6 inches wide at the surface. The shaft was sunk to 30 feet, several tonnes of quartz crushed, and then abandoned due to the lack of capital. The reef strikes south-east, dips vertically, with well defined walls encased in clay. At depth the reef was said to be 5 feet thick, with 1.5 feet of that quartz with abundant pyrite, and the rest quartiferous mica schist mullock, yielding gold.

September 1883 The Lucknow Gold Mining Company Limited was formed by James Frederick Healy, with £24,000 capital. There were twelve shareholders each with 2,000 shares each. The shareholders were mainly from Arrowtown, and were William Brown (settler), John Thomas M. Hornsby (journalist), John O'Kane (hotel keeper), William Scoles (farmer), Thomas Harvey (Macetown mining manager), Robert Pritchard (merchant), John Barlow (agent), William Jenkins (merchant), Charles Henry Fleming (by his guardian), Robert McDowell (carrier), James Finney (miner), and Healy himself.

A tunnel was driven, some quartz was crushed to test the lode (said to be stone carrying patches of gold, and irregular). The leader was found to extend to a depth of no more than 10 feet before cutting out. The project was abandoned, the company lasting a little over a year.

The site was pegged again in 1896, but no information was found other than prospecting.
