The Royal Standard was the first claim above Carricktown, with another claim called New Royal Standard just above Quartzville at the bottom of the hill.
Information was found from the time the goldfield started in 1870 to 1875.
The Old Royal Standard lease was tried and abandoned by four companies between 1870 to 1873, after expending much money. There was rich stone on the surface, but the reef was small.
September 1871 it is reported the Royal Standard battery had just opened by Duff and party. The reef is described as broken, mullocky, 14 feet thick. The battery crushed for the public. An additional four stamps were added to the battery in 1872. Work continues on both leases at the same time. A working group of miners had taken over the Old lease in 1875, intending to drive a low level tunnel to intersect the reef at depth.
There was also a New Royal Standard claim near Quartzville at the bottom of the hill, owned by the same company. A few rich crushings were taken out around 1872, then the claim was abandoned as the company believed the reef went to no depth. In 1874, Herbert, Watson and Cotton (surnames) were prospecting the abandoned New Royal Standard claim when they found a new reef running parallel with the old one. They re-named the lease the Crown and Cross, dug a tunnel, and crushed initially 250 tonnes of ore at the Royal Standard battery. Unfortunately most of the gold was intermixed with arsenopyrite, that the technology of the day could not separate.
