The Island Block Gold Mining Company Ltd was formed in London in 1888 with 60 000 pounds capital. It came to an arrangement with land owner Joseph Clark, to hydro sluice on a massive scale his freehold land for a royalty. One source states the destruction of good agricultural land was not worth the meagre gold results, however another states after 1898 the gold obtained was fair.
An 1889 example states over 12 days 22 000 cubic yards of sand, mud and gravel was processed obtaining 50 ounces of gold, with costs amounting to 33% of the value of the gold obtained. The company employed around fourteen men. Professor C.E. Rawlins was General Manager, while John Oats Matthew originally from Cornwall was manager during early developments. Operations ceased in the early 20th Century.
Other dredges in the area was Hercules, Hercules Extended, and Roxburgh Amalgamated.
Island Block is 2 kilometres south of Roxburgh, on the eastern banks of the Clutha River. The Teviot Road which leaves Roxburgh, follows the eastern bank of the river, then parts company with it, Island Hill separating the river from the road. The road follows an old river channel for the Clutha River, in the process depositing gold. Hercules Flat marks the northern border, and Pinders Pond the southern border of this small area.
