A former gold mine.
The mine produced around 5,400 ounces of gold. This site is different to the 'Old Golden Ridge Mine' which was a few hundred metres to the north, and mined at an earlier date.
Joe Malone and the Lunn brothers discovered the deposit in the mid 1890's. The mine was taken over by the Taitapu Estates Company, which built a small town called Parkeston on the west side of the Paturau River. Charles Edmond was in charge of mining. Two adits were developed of a reef ranging from 2 inches to 8 feet thick. The Taitapu battery was erected at the bottom of the Big Slaty Gorge. It opened in February 1898, but activity only lasted a few weeks, when gold reserves ran out. The battery subsequently re-opened with ore from the Anthill and New Find mines, but closed again in 1906.
This later mining saw the Taitapu Estates Company spin off a subsidiary called The Golden Blocks (Taitapu) Ltd, which built a new eight head stamp battery, with tramway and aerial ore ropeway. In 1905, mine manager Johnson was arrested for stealing gold. The new mine manager F. Giles died in 1909, and the mines closed temporarily. The battery burned to the ground in 1911, and all activity on the goldfield had ceased by 1914.
