Name(s) in local language(s):
Catena della Gobba di Rollin-Rocca di Verra - area del Lago Blu (Chaîne de la Bosse de Rollin-Rocca di Verra - région du Lac Bleu), Champoluc, Ayas, Val d'Ayas, Valle d'Aosta (Vallée d'Aoste), Italia
Serpentinized mantle slice of the ophiolitic Zermatt-Saas nappe, which forms the eastern slope of the Gobba di Rollin-Rocca di Verra ridge.
It consists of magnetite-bearing antigorite serpentinite with lenses and veins rich in reddish titanclinohumite, diopside, and olivine (forsterite) of Alpine age (high-P imprint). The serpentinite is transected by swarms of metarodingitic gabbro dykes which are transposed parallel to the Alpine regional schistosity, extensively boudinaged and characterised by a coarse to pegmatoid igneous texture. A few of them, however, are fine-grained and perhaps derived from basalt dykes. Primary pyroxene is replaced by pseudomorph pure diopside, locally rimmed by small garnets and chlorite, and cut by veins filled by these minerals. The matrix, mainly derived from igneous plagioclase, consists of a granoblastic aggregate of Ca-Fe-rich garnet, epidote, vesuvianite, etc. The same minerals also occur as wonderful crystals filling some vein generations. Every metarodingitic dyke and boudin is mantled by greenish chlorite schists, locally diopside- and/or magnetite-bearing.
A subvertical fault, marked by a strongly metasomatized, very hard breccia (listvenite), consisting of carbonatized serpentinite fragments and calcite-dolomite-quartz matrix green Cr-rich mica (fuchsite) of Oligocene age, occurs within the Rocca di Verra serpentinite.
The rondingite block found by Boeris (1909) on the western lateral moraine of Verra Grande Glacier, in which he observed intersting crystal forms of epidote associated with diopside, titanite, clinochlore, and garnet, probably originated from the large east face of Gobba di Rollin.
