This is not the same locality as the Otway Ni deposit, found elsewhere in the district. The Otway gold deposit was discovered by Tex Otway in 1948. The following year he was joined by Tom Hill, and some minor amounts of ore and ounces was produced.
However modern exploration has uncovered far more gold. JORC Measured Indicated and Inferred resource 1.73 Mt at 1.2 g/t for 67 700 ounces of gold.
The gold mineralisation is hosted by east north-east trending quartz veins within siltstone, sandstone and conglomerate of the Mosquito Creek Formation, dipping 80 to 90 degrees north-west.
The location is about 15 kilometres east of Nullagine, and 9 kilometres north-east of the Golden Eagle processing plant. Site explored by Millennium Minerals in recent years, and possible site for a pit. The Shearers prospect is 300 metres north of Otways, and there is some suggestion the mineralisation between the two are linked. A road travels south south-east from the Skull Springs Road for about 3 kilometres to the location, which is an area of disturbed ground from exploration next to a small dam.
Mineralisation is patchy, occurring in east north-east to north-east trending sub-vertical to steep north-west dipping veins hosted by conglomerate, with the veins pinching out either side of the conglomerate. The veins are 0.2 to 1 metre wide, 40 to 100 metres long.
