Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Lady Adelaide No. 1; Beatrice; Harp of Erin
When inspected in 1908 the lease was abandoned. The main shaft reached a depth of 60 feet. There was a second shaft but it could not be inspected as was half full of water. This was important as in 1899, the Tremaine mill set up by a group of Perth speculators was removed. The owners of the Lady Adelaide lease erected instead a 10 head battery, which crushed for the four or so mines which remained active into the early years of the 1900's. The last report from the battery was 1904. Water was obtained from the shaft mentioned above, but the battery would be inactive for a month at a time, awaiting the shaft to refill.
The lease was initially developed by J.L. Oborn and R. O'Brien. The lease was named the Beatrice at this time but little information was found on it. Gibb-Maitland states the lease is GML 49.
May 1899 GML 538, the Lady Adelaide No. 1 lease is applied for, 6 acres, by Timothy Crowley, Edwin Stanton, and John Davies Godson. They state it contains most of the old Harp of Erin lease. The Harp of Erin is reported as producing a total of 22.5 tonnes of ore for 11.55 ounces of gold. This lease was applied for as 12 acres by Michael Finegan and Thomas Smyth late 1898, with crushings early 1899.
February 1900, things came to head between the two parties. Finegan applied for forfeiture of the lease. He stated there was an agreement for him to have half the lease when Godson, Crowley and Stanton took over the old Harp of Erin for their Lady Adelaide mine. However the basis of forfeiture was non compliance of labour conditions. This was denied, although they appeared willing to sell out half the lease to Finegan. GML 562.
It appears from this point most of the activity related to the operation of the battery for other mines in the area. The last report on this found was 1904. In this year, 700 tonnes of tailings from the battery was cyanided producing 325 ounces.
