The Queen of Balagundi Gold Mine is at the northern end of the line of lode, the mine lending its name to the reef through the area.
O'Neil and party first discovered gold at Balagundi, and pegged this lease (36 acres), and named it the Gift. They sank a shaft 200 feet deep, passing the reef at the 147 foot level.
The lease was sold to a French syndicate which floated the Franco-Australian Exploration Company Limited in Paris, with ₤250,000 capital. This was to develop the Gift, and also the Pride of the Hills lease near the Great Boulder mine on the Golden Mile Kalgoorlie. The mine Manager was James Klotz. The Paris Gift Gold Mining Company was spun off to develop the Balagundi mine. The company re-named the Balagundi lease the Paris Gift. Locals warned the French they were over capitalising, and after eighteen months this proved the case, and the company collapsed with shareholders losing all their money.
The reef was up to 8 feet wide, as schist intersected with quartz veins showing gold in places, between hard diorite walls.
The company then sat on the lease with no work being conducted on it. In the late 1890's the mine went through several ownership changes in a short period.
August 1898, W.S. Lecky successfully applied for forfeiture of the lease from the Paris Gift company, which had indicated they intended to abandon it anyway (GML 560Y).
A prospector called Earle (surname) controled the lease early 1899, but mid 1899 a syndicate applied for forfeiture. This was headed by well known mining identity A.E. Morgans. The syndicate had shortly before purchased several leases in the Mount Monger area also, although a dispute arose over transfer due to some debts owed.
November 1900, A.A. Carlier and Paddy Maher owned the lease they call Lake Killarney.
February 1901, W.T. Selborne, W. Doyle, E. McCullagh, D. McCullagh, P. Diskon and H. Pettigrew apply for forfeiture of the lease, which was delayed until April and was eventually successful and re-named it the Queen of Balagundi.
In 1902, J. McDonald applied for forfeiture from the above group, and renamed the lease Homeward Bound.
