Mona Gold Mine
The Mona Gold Mine is a historic lease now occupied by the Paddington mine open pit.
Mona Mine Limited was registered in 1896, to purchase the lease from Gold Leads Corporation Limited. The purchase price was ₤50,000, being ₤34,924 cash and the rest in shares. ₤25,000 pounds was reserved as working capital.
Mine manager was mining expert J.J. O'Brien, who spent the capital in various ways in record time. A 10 head battery was erected, but never produced anything substantial from the mine, and it was largely used for public crushing.
A new fangled iron poppet head was imported from the United States. O'Brien could not work out how it should be put together, and the source states caused terror in all who approached it, as it teetered on the verge of collapse for several years. Bits would fall off at intervals and end up at the bottom of the shaft.
The company soon ran out of money, and tributers were let on the lease, and the battery at times continued crushing for local prospectors.
