The Golden Arrow is opposite the Broad Arrow Tavern, just east from the Goldfields Highway. Historically the lease was just north-east of the Hill End mine. Along with Hill End, it is now part of a large abandoned open pit dug in recent decades.
Early reports by people like Leslie Norman, enthused about the mine containing thousands of tonnes of ore at 16 oz per tonne. A company was floated in London. They erected a 10 head battery before hardly any work had been done, expanded to 20 heads by 1899 after the battery had sat in pieces on the lease for a considerable time. The battery location was unsuitable, and only worked occasionally because of lack of water, and ore. Water was then piped 5 kilometres from a mine at Paddington. The company went through two reconstructions, and was getting loans to pay wages in 1900.
In 1906, two masked robbers entered the battery one night, overpowered the watchman and tied him to a boiler. Battery plates containing 80 ounces of gold was taken. Shortly after the mine was let on tribute, and by 1910 the mine had been abandoned altogether.
In 1934, a Boulder syndicate erected a 5 head battery on the lease, and for a few years crushed for local prospectors, as well as some ore from the Golden Arrow lease itself.
